European Mobility Week

Celebrate European Mobility Week 16th – 22nd September 2011 with Cork City Council

Cork City Council is again promoting European Mobility Week, an initiative taking place every year from 16th to 22nd September in hundreds of cities and towns all over Europe. Irish cities and Cork in particular, have been consistent supporters and participants in this initiative since the year 2000, when it began as European Car Free Day.  The event has been based around a specific theme each year.

This year’s theme is Alternative Mobility and aims to encourage people to leave the car at home and use an alternative, sustainable mode of travel to work, school, shopping and leisure activities. European Mobility Week is an opportunity for everyone to look at how their current travel patterns contribute to pollution and congestion in cities like Cork and to try a sustainable alternative to the car.

As well as promoting walking or cycling to work and school, Cork City Council has arranged some activities and initiatives for the week to encourage people to try Alternative Mobility:

  • Cycle to Lunch: there’ll be bike – racks at Blackrock Pier, Fitzgerald’s Park and the Bandfield, Mardyke Walk so bring along the sandwiches and enjoy lunch outdoors.
  • Rickshaw Mystery History Tour: bring your bike and meet at 7pm at the Peace Park on Wednesday, 21st September.
  • Free Park & Ride from Black Ash on Car Free Day, Thursday 22nd September.
  • Launch, Reception and Guided Heritage Trail Walk from City Hall at 6pm on Thursday 22nd September.
  • As in past years, Cork City Council is sponsor of The Rebel Pedal Parade.

European Mobility Week is a time to think about how you travel and what impact that has on your health, your finances and the Environment. So turn off the engines, get out and about and try walking, cycling or public transport and free up the streets for people, not cars!
